Research overwhelmingly points to the benefits of learning a foreign language, particularly early in life. A young child’s brain is like a sponge, hard wired to accept a foreign language much faster and more accurately than an older child’s or adult’s. If you have a young child, take advantage of this perfect window of opportunity and give them the gift of language – it’s a gift that will open so many doors and enrich them for their whole lives.
Here are just a few of the benefits to becoming bilingual and trilingual at an early age:
- Better overall standardized test scores (including SAT)
- Better English proficiency (yes, a foreign language can make the child’s English even better!)
- Higher levels of mathematics
- Easier and better fluency of foreign language(s)
- Better problem solving skills
- More creativity
- Better critical thinking skills
- Enhanced memory
Not only do children reap plenty of cognitive rewards of learning a foreign language, but they experience cultural and societal benefits as well. Imagine the opportunities your child will have at his or her disposal by being trilingual. We live in a global society, and foreign language and cultural enrichment is the best gift you can give to your child.

Now, perhaps you’re sold on the benefits of foreign language acquisition, but you’re not sure language immersion is the way to go. What is language immersion and how does it work?
Modeled after the pioneering French immersion programs developed in Canada in the 1960s, language immersion schools in the U.S. are designed to enrich the education of native-English-speaking students by teaching them all their academic subjects in a second (and third) language. The goal is for students to become proficient in the second (and third) language and develop increased cultural awareness while reaching a high level of academic achievement. Students develop proficiency in the second and third languages by hearing and using them to learn all their school subjects rather than by studying the language itself.
Immersion programs are the fastest growing and most effective type of foreign language program currently available in U.S. schools. Language immersion students can be expected to reach higher levels of second-language proficiency than students in other school-based language programs.
At Frontiers Academy, we employ a near-full immersion model. In a full immersion school, teachers use no English at all in the early grades. In Grade 2, 3, or 4, teachers introduce English language arts and reading for one period per day and gradually move toward an even distribution of English and the immersion language by Grade 5 or 6. At Frontiers Academy, we do teach English starting in preschool to ensure a strong English proficiency foundation throughout the child’s education, but we focus equally on all three of the languages we teach.
